your website goes offline. your email stops working. someone else can buy your domain name.
the sequence
domain names are registered for a fixed period, usually one year. when the registration expires, a grace period begins — typically 30 days. during this period you can renew at normal cost.
after the grace period, the domain enters a redemption phase. renewal becomes more expensive, sometimes significantly. after redemption, the domain is released for public registration.
if someone buys your lapsed domain, you cannot get it back without purchasing it from them.
what this means in practice
you lose yourbusiness.co.uk. any email sent to youyourbusinesscouk fails or goes to someone else. your website is replaced with whatever the new owner puts there. any business cards, signage, or word of mouth directing people to that address now points somewhere else.
